Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Surgery

Aortic aneurysm that require repair can be repaired surgically. Surgery usually involves placing a synthetic tube into the area of the aneurysm to allow blood flow to continue and prevent further enlargement. Abdominal aortic aneurysms can also be repaired without traditional surgery using a special stent that is inserted through a small incision in the groin area. This “stent-graft” expands within the aneurysm, preventing further enlargement and forming a new conduit for blood flow. Stenting for thoracic aneurysms is being investigated as a possible treatment.
