Carotid Intima-Medial Thickness

Carotid IMT provides your doctor with moving images of your carotid artery and takes excellent pictures that will help your doctor to evaluate your circulation’s health. A specially trained technician (Sonographer) will use a gel to slide a microphone-like device called a transducer over your neck. Reflected sound waves will provide images of your carotid arteries. Carotid IMT uses the same technology that allows doctors to see an unborn baby inside the pregnant mother. Once the ultrasound images of the arteries are taken, measurements of the inner artery wall are made to help diagnose the presence of vascular disease. This ultrasound does not involve radiation.
