How the Valves Work

The heart has four Valves that allow blood to flow through the heart in one direction only. The mitral valve and the tricuspid valve (atrioventricular valves) are between the atria and ventricles. The pulmonary valve and aortic valve (semilunar valves) are between the ventricles and the arteries carrying oxygen-poor blood to the lungs and oxygen-rich blood to the body, respectively.
