Intervertebral Disc Replacement

The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae. The space between each vertebra is filled by an intervertebral disc that cushions the vetebrae and allows the spine to flex. Certain conditions may indicate the need for a replacement disc such as: persistent pain, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, isthmic spondylolisthesis, spinal fractures and tumors. A artificial disc can help alleviate pain and improve function. It has movable surfaces and is usually made of metal and plastic. The replacement joint is placed between the vertebra.
