Engaging Patients with Illustration

September 23, 2014

As medical illustrators, we strive to create engaging and clear patient education illustrations. With so many different medical procedures that are performed on a daily basis in the US and around the world, it is important to have materials that help both patients and caregivers understand pathology and modern standards of care.

Just as you should be short and direct when communicating patient follow-up care instructions, medical illustrations for patients should be clear and uncomplicated. Decisions must be made about what anatomy is relevant to the story as well as how much of the body should you show to help orient the viewer. Usage of arrow and color coding are as important as labels in communicating a story.

In our most recent patient education project for Sentara Healthcare, our goal was to create a series of patient education illustrations for the Sentara Heart Hospital Technology Display. These illustrations needed to feature technologies offered at their heart center. Topics included: transcatheter aortic valve replacement, coronary stents, coronary artery bypass grafts, left ventricular assist devices, 3D electrical mapping, amplatzer septal occluders, ICD and CRT devices. We needed to create high quality and visually interesting illustrations using our 3D models while showing a clearly defined story in each that could be quickly understood as patients passed through the main foyer. The result was a cohesive collection of images that quickly tell the story of heart procedures that are today’s standard of care.

Whether it is an illustration created from scratch or a a stock image that is modified to better suit your needs, Medmovie’s staff of experienced medical illustrators can help you on create outstanding illustrations to educate and engage your patient and caregiver audience.
