Phakic Lens Replacement

There was a problem accessing the media asset for this topic.

Phakic lens replacement involves the surgical placement of an intraocular lens within either the anterior or posterior chamber of the eye without the removal of the eye’s natural lens. Phakic lens replacement is a procedure that is designed to correct the optical power of the eye.

Phakic lenses, designed for anterior placement, can be inserted into the anterior chamber of the eye through a microsurgical incision made in the cornea. The phakic lens is then placed either between the back surface of the cornea and the anterior surface of the iris or is directly attached to the front surface of the iris. The placement that is chosen depends on the particular design of the phakic lens being used.

Phakic lenses, designed for posterior placement, can be inserted into the posterior chamber of the eye through a microsurgical incision made in the cornea. The phakic lens is placed in the space between the back surface of the iris and the natural lens of the eye.
